Johanne Gour
Johanne Gour has developed as a truly interdisciplinary artist. A cellist from childhood, she later discovered piano, singing and composition. Fascinated by color and graphic form, she started out in the visual arts. But it was the stage work, such as theater and dance, that won her over completely. A lover of literature and dramaturgy, she is also fascinated by the direct expression of the human person, such as investigated by the great theater theorist Jerzy Grotowski for his notion of poor theater, among others. She subsequently became more and more interested in dance, which she sees as the trans-formation, the "shaping", of an ever fashionable human substance. She thus perfected her study of the performing body and choreographic composition, guided first by Elisabeth Langley, Françoise Sullivan, Paul-André Fortier and Margie Gillis. In addition to her academic training in ballet and modern dance, she simultaneously completed this deep understanding of kinesthetic capacities with extensive training in the Alexander Technique. Shortly after obtaining her B.F.A. from Montreal Concordia University, she unfortunately interrupted her activities, due to increasingly serious health problems. After a few years of withdrawing from the dance scene, she started choreographing again.
Johanne Gour's quest is to create a dance that does not stem from the intellect, yet nonetheless meaningful. Since 2009 and on, she has presented a number of new works, most notably at Liens et lieux, danse contemporaine marginale, for which she was the artistic director and producer. D'un lieu où tous sont admis...(2009); Rejoindre (2009); La Prière (2010); Piavicorde ou le destin tragique des Avant-gardes (2010), for which she wrote the text and which was both play and choreography, and Les instincts cachés (2011). Ensemble ou séparés, je me souviendrai de toi! (Together or apart, I'll remember you!) presented in December 2011, and revived in June 2012 for the Fringe Festival, opened up a new level of intimacy. As part of Semaine Québec Danse (April 2012), the choreographer offered a short, entertaining piece to passers-by at Place des Arts: Ck'lone, Pelouff et Piètreries! Continuing in the intimate vein, she brings us a slice of dream with the solo OisDév ou la profondeur dévoilée... created for dancer Chen Zielinski in May 2012. In December 2012, through the juxtaposition of several creative modes, including dance, theater and her own participation on stage as a singer and percussion musician, she presents a creation with an autobiographical flavour: La Cache de Johanne.
Her participation in Treue Körper, at Fringe 2013, involved two works. The revival of the solo OisDév ou la profondeur dévoilée... and the creation of a new piece for ten dancers: Corps, qu'as-tu à me dire? The latter marks the start of a series of choreographies more specifically concerned with exploring the possibilities of the body, for the body, as an instrument delivering the world of the unconscious. This was followed by the solo Figures de l'inconnu (Shapes of the unknown) for Amélia Lamanque in 2015, and the pieces L'imprévisible forme des corps aux lendemains de la vie in 2017, Mon coeur s'allonge comme une éponge in 2022 and D'arrache-pied jusqu'au bout de tes doigts in 2023.
